Romans: The Old Law and the New Law

Romans chapter 7 is going to show us how we could never achieve that newness of life, presented in chapter 6, by our own willpower to do good or by means of the old covenant. On our own, we will always fail. God, through our lord Jesus Christ, has set us free from this old law of sin and death by the new law of spirit and life. God’s moral law is now fulfilled in us who walk according to the spirit. Now we can fulfill our design to live in daily relationship with God for the glory of God, fellowshipping with Him in light and sanctification.

Romans 6 addresses Godly living. It addresses how our practices and lifestyle are to be transformed day to day. We are no longer to live for worldliness and self, but for God’s purposes. Romans 6 is a picture of a vibrant Christian life, that is setting aside the weights of sin and the entanglements of the world, and is living a new life of righteousness toward God.

The grace of God has abounded beyond our sinfulness, and we have been forgiven and reconciled to God through Christ. Chapter 6 addresses how we deal with sin by discussing how Christ conquered over it through his death and resurrection. It explains how our new spiritual identity and unity in Christ affects everything we do. Now in Christ we are dead to sin, made alive unto God with peace and freedom.

Romans: Death in Adam, Life in Christ

Romans provides a world view for Christians who stand and rejoice in the hope of glory of God. It's God's perspective of humanity. In God's eyes, all people are in 1 of 2 categories: dead in Adam or alive in Christ. What this section of Romans so beautifully reveals is that this was always God's plan, to leave man after the fall in the condemnation of Adam, so that by one reconciling perfect work He could one day place us securely in the righteousness of His son Jesus Christ.

Therefore being justified, we have peace with God through our lord Jesus Christ. This whole chapter 5 is based on being justified and will show the blessedness of righteousness. Being justified we also have peace, we also have grace, we also can rejoice in the glory of God, we also can rejoice in tribulation... Being justified we will be saved from the wrath to come, being justified we exult in God to whom we've been reconciled... The chief purpose of man is to love and enjoy God forever, and we get to experience that now.

Romans: How God Justifies the Ungodly

The Gospel was the plan all along. It has been one consistent continuing narrative through the Bible. Paul wants all Christians to grasp that this Gospel of justification by faith was proclaimed beforehand. There's only one way of salvation showed in both Old Testament and New Testament. It has never been by works, or circumcision, or the law... It is and always was by grace alone, through faith alone, by Christ alone. Closing we will see that we can have the same kind of faith of Abraham and that we can choose to believe the word of God about ourselves despite our sinful nature. We stand righteous in the presence of God by Christ.

We're in Romans chapter 2 and 3 and we're still appreciating how good the Good News is by considering how bad the news is without Christ. We're still seeing our desperate need for a savior and that the whole world is in serious trouble. Without the Gospel that's all there is: condemnation. But God, and God alone, is just to judge. And He intervened through His son and his cross to bring salvation to our repentant hearts. From Romans 2:17 to 3:20 we see that the jewish people, who might have thought, because they were the covenant people, they were exempt from the condemnation that comes from sin, instead they also are lawbreakers and guilty before God.

The message of Romans shows us how God sees creation and humanity: all men are under his righteous eye, the Jew, the hedonist and the stoic alike. Though not all of humanity has had access to God's written Word, His law remains imprinted upon the hearts of man, burned into the collective conscious of humanity. However, Romans chapter two demonstrates that our status in God's kingdom is not determined by a sliding scale of good or bad, where we are pitted against the moral compasses of our neighbors, but in accepting God's truth as the only truth: that despite the evil wickedness of man to revile and reject their God, he has provided a means by which he can and will rightly judge or justify humanity. Jesus is that means.

Romans: The Wrath of God Revealed

The gospel of Jesus Christ is good news to the world, but we can’t fully appreciate it without understanding how bad the news is without him. Romans 1:18-3:20 details the guilt of the world before God, and we must not avoid the parts of the book of Romans that expose the brokenness and sin of mankind. In embracing this truth, we are then humbled that through the cross, God would save sinful man in love and justice.
